Joan will be a judge at the 6th annual Embassy Chef Challenge, a friendly international culinary competition and Cultural Tourism DC’s annual fundraising benefit.  The Embassy Chef Challenge features tastings, awards, and world-class silent and live auctions while celebrating the talents of embassy chefs. Chefs prepare an open tasting to compete for two awards: the People’s Choice, selected by the cultural and diplomatic community in attendance, and the Judges’ Choice determined by a panel of celebrity chefs and food critics. Previous Embassy Chef Challenge winners have garnered international recognition in the United States and their home countries. Embassy Chef Challenge guests also enjoy one of the best silent and live auctions in Washington, DC featuring one-of-a-kind experiences. The program focuses on how generations of Jewish cooks have ingeniously adapted to their surroundings, using whatever resources were available, to suit the values of kashrut and the traditions of Shabbat and Jewish festivals. Ottolenghi grew up in Jewish West Jerusalem. Tamimi was raised in the Muslim neighborhoods of East Jerusalem. Reflecting the diverse tastes of their youth, Ottolenghi: The Cookbook presents 140 recipes featuring bold and flavorful ingredients, aromatic herbs, and the culinary traditions of the Mediterranean, as well as influences from California, Italy, and North Africa.

Saturday Night Sips and Sunday Night Suppers

Venue: Washington, DC

Sips & Suppers is a major celebration of food and community in the Washington, DC metro area. Now in its fifth year, Sips & Suppers began in 2009 as the brainchild of Alice Waters to raise the awareness of homelessness and hunger in the nation’s capital and to promote efforts to develop sustainable and local solutions to these challenges.

The weekend supports the wonderful work of DC Central Kitchen and Martha’s Table, organizations that serve the neediest individuals in the nation’s capital. Since its inception, Sips & Suppers has raised over $675,000 in financing for the essential programs run by these organizations. The event is proudly hosted by celebrated chefs José Andrés, Joan Nathan & Alice Waters.

In 2013, Sips & Suppers will be held on the weekend of January 26–27.

On Saturday, January 26, 2013, Sips celebrates the contribution young people make to feeding and supporting their community. This lively cocktail reception features top artisan chefs and mixologists preparing their signature dishes and drinks. Held at the dramatic space, the Newseum on Pennsylvania Avenue, in Washington, DC, and featuring a live jazz band, it is a fun and educational evening.

On Sunday, January 27, 2013, Suppers features some of the country’s finest chefs preparing meals in private homes throughout the city. This year, we expect that Suppers will be served at 29 homes in the metro area to more than 550 guests. Renowned chefs from the DC region, from across the country, and, indeed, across the world, donate their time and skills to participate in these extraordinary evenings featuring great food and wine, and stimulating conversation. Locally we are excited to include Scott Drewno of The Source, Nick Stefanelli of Bibiana, Pati Jinich of The Mexican Cultural Institute, Haidar Karoum of Proof and Estadio, just to name a few. Also, from across the nation and abroad we are featuring Michael Anthony from Gramercy Tavern in NY, Elizabeth Bourgeois from Le Mas Tourteron in Gordes, France, David Lawrence from 1300 on Filmore in San Francisco and Joel Hough from Il Buco in NY.

The revenue from ticket sales for the weekend goes to the two 501(c)3 organizations supported by these events. Almost all food and wine, travel and accommodations for the chefs, the chefs’ time and venues are donated and expenses are kept to a minimum so most revenue goes directly to support the work of DC Central Kitchen and Martha’s Table.
About the organizations:

- DC Central Kitchen uses food as a tool to change lives. Each day, the Kitchen serves up 10,000 balanced meals packed with fresh, local produce. Half of these meals are delivered to area homeless shelters, after-school programs, and other nonprofit organizations serving low-income DC residents. The other half are prepared in DC public and private schools, making DCCK the only nonprofit in America conducting a full-service healthy school meal program. They also offer an acclaimed Culinary Job Training program that empowers at-risk, unemployed adults to embark on new careers. - Martha’s Table transforms lives by engaging the community in developing sustainable solutions to poverty. Joan Speaks to the Culinary Historians of Boston

Inspired by her own family history, Ms. Nathan set off to learn more about the often hidden history and foods of French Jews.  Within this rich agricultural country, Ashkenazic, Sephardic, and Provençal Jewish food developed side by side and often melded with French regional cooking.  While the Jews of Alsace cooked with goose fat and sauerkraut, those of the south cooked with oil and garlic. Since some Jewish families in Provence, for instance, have been there for over two thousand years, it is hard to differentiate Jewish from Provençal food customs. Fougasse, a bread with holes, traditionally mixed, kneaded and shaped at home, then brought to a communal oven for baking was, for example, the holiday bread for Jews. This diversity of origin goes beyond region and all blend together in the French people, including its Jews.

Since some Jewish families in Provence, for instance, have been there for over two thousand years, it is hard to differentiate Jewish from Provençal food customs. Fougasse, a bread with holes, traditionally mixed, kneaded and shaped at home, then brought to a communal oven for baking was, for example, the holiday bread for Jews. This diversity of origin goes beyond region and all blend together in the French people, including its Jews.

The New York Public Library is pleased to welcome award-winning cookbook author Joan Nathan. Ms. Nathan will be in conversation with “Food Maven” and acclaimed cookbook author, Arthur Schwartz as they discuss her latest book Quiches, kugels, and couscous : my search for Jewish cooking in France.


The event will be held in the The Sue and Edgar Wachenheim III Trustees Room (Room 206) of the Stephen A. Schwarzman Building of The New York Public Library on 42nd Street and Fifth Avenue. This program is made possible by the generous donation of The Dorot Foundation. The event is free but reservations are required.

This year’s competing chefs include Todd Gray from Equinox/Watershed, Haidar Karoum from Proof/Estadio, Jeff Black from BlackSalt Restaurant Group/Pearl Dive Oyster Palace and Brian McBride from Blue Duck Tavern. Each chef will compete in a cook-off battle featuring a secret ingredient. Chefs will be judged by a panel including Ted Allen of Food Network’s Chopped, award-winning cookbook author Joan Nathan and host of Simply Ming, Ming Tsai. Last year’s Food Fight included a bonus battle between team Anthony Bourdain and Eric Ripert and team Tom Colicchio and Jose Andres, which I’m betting they might do something like this again at this year’s competition. Bourdain will be returning as the host and Jose Andres will be serving as the chair of the event. In addition to the friendly chef competition, more than 60 local restaurants will be serving a variety of small bites.

The 2011 Capital Food Fight is at 6 PM on Thursday, November 10th at the Ronald Reagan Building in Penn Quarter. Tickets are $200 and all proceeds go to DCCK. You can follow the conversation about the 2011 Capital Food Fight with @DCCK’s hashtag, #FoodFight.

More than 60 years after the National School Lunch Program began in 1946, the program feeds more than 31 million children every day. The Charles Guggenheim Center for the Documentary Film presents this 2010 documentary, in which leaders from all sides of the school food debate, including government officials, foodservice experts, activists, and students, weigh in on the program and discuss ways to continue nourishing America’s children for another 60 years. Directed by Ernie Park and Michael Graziano. Food writer Jane Black will moderate a post-screening discussion that will include filmmaker Michael Graziano, nutritionist Dr. Margo Wootan from the Center for Science in the Public Interest, former USDA Secretary Dan Glickman, and others.

Attendees are encouraged to bring their own kugel dish and stories of its history for a potluck following the service's conclusion.

But a few brave delis are breaking up canons of the dying model.

Saul's Restaurant and Deli in Berkeley is convening these renegades for a Deli Summit. Four very different models.

Saul's owners Karen Adelman and Peter Levitt believe they and their colleagues will benefit from collaboration on a common language. In a culinary genre defined by rigid expectations (yet varied depending on customer), comparison and critique, these delis trailblazing the deli lexicon can gradually give each other points of reference and authority.

What do these departures from the Deli Institution look like on the menu, the plate, in the dining room? What does it mean to thrive as a deli business? This is what the Summit is for: to communicate the mechanics of survival and sustainability to Deli customers around the country, and to celebrate the unique challenges and thrills of running a Jewish Deli.

This is a follow-up to Saul's Referendum on the Jewish Deli Menu. Now with the other delis, Saul's will talk nuts and bolts of their industry.

It's a behind the scenes, chefs-in-the-trenches conversation open to the public.
